Composite vs uPVC Door | What a Locksmith Fits at Home
Composite or uPVC? A Crawley locksmith cuts through the showroom pitch and tells you what actually decides door security and when the extra spend is.
You've probably stood in a showroom, or scrolled a manufacturer's website, and come away thinking composite doors are some kind of security revelation while uPVC is for people who don't care. I fit both. I've opened both after break-ins. And I'll tell you straight: the slab is not what decides whether your door holds.
What decides it is the cylinder in the barrel, and the multipoint gearbox behind the panel. Full stop. Get those two components right and a uPVC door is as secure as most composites. Get them wrong on a composite and you've spent £1,800 on a slab that a burglar opens in forty seconds with a £3 screwdriver.
That's the central argument of this piece. Now let me back it up with specifics.
What the Door Slab Actually Does
The slab, whether composite or uPVC, is essentially the cosmetic and structural shell. Composite is made from a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) skin over a solid timber or foam core. It's denser, heavier, and it doesn't flex the way a hollow uPVC panel can. That matters for kick-in resistance, and it matters for looks. Composite doors genuinely do feel more like timber, and after ten years in a West Sussex winter they hold their colour and shape better.
uPVC panels are lighter, cheaper to manufacture, and the hollow sections can bow under pressure. A determined kick to a poorly-fitted uPVC door can spring the panel away from the frame even when the multipoint locks are engaged, if the hinge reinforcement isn't there.
So composite wins on raw material resistance. I'm not disputing that.
But kick-in is a small fraction of how residential doors in RH10 and RH11 are actually attacked. Lock snapping is the dominant method in West Sussex, and it doesn't care whether your door cost £800 or £2,200.
How Doors Are Actually Attacked Around Crawley
In Broadfield, Bewbush, and Ifield, the pattern I see repeatedly is cylinder snapping. Someone grips the exposed section of the euro cylinder with a mole grip or a pair of locking pliers, snaps it at the anti-snap groove (or straight through if there isn't one), and the door opens. Takes under a minute. Works on composite and uPVC equally because the door itself is irrelevant. The attack is entirely on the cylinder.
Framing is the second method. Forcing the frame away from the door edge at the latch point. This is more common on older uPVC where the frame profile is thin, but a composite door hung in a poor-quality frame with a weak gearbox isn't immune.
Kicking? Less common than people think, and modern multipoint systems on both door types handle it well when they're fitted correctly and serviced.
The Cylinder Is the Thing
If you take one thing away from this: whatever door you have or buy, fit a TS007 3-star rated cylinder. The rating means it's been tested against snapping, picking, and drilling. Brands I'd put in my own door, and have: Ultion, Avocet ABS, Mul-T-Lock MT5+, and the ERA Fortress in the 3-star configuration.
A TS007 3-star Ultion cylinder costs around £50 to £80 retail. A locksmith fitting takes twenty minutes and another £40 to £60 in labour. So for £90 to £140 all-in you've addressed the most common attack vector regardless of what your door is made from.
That money spent on cylinder and gearbox quality does more for your actual security than the difference between a mid-range uPVC door and an entry-level composite.
The Gearbox Is the Other Thing
The multipoint gearbox is the mechanism that throws the hooks and deadbolts when you lift the handle. GU, Fuhr, Maco, Roto, Winkhaus, and Mila all make decent gearboxes. The Lockmaster range is another one I see regularly on doors in Maidenbower and Pound Hill.
A failed gearbox means hooks that won't engage, which means a door that looks locked but isn't. I've attended jobs in Horley and Redhill where the homeowner didn't realise the mechanism had given out. They were lifting the handle and turning the key on a door with one deadbolt engaged instead of five locking points.
Gearboxes on both composite and uPVC doors wear out. Ten years is a reasonable lifespan with no maintenance, less if the door drops on its hinges and the mechanism is grinding. It's the same servicing requirement on both.

So When Is Composite Worth It?
Here's my honest answer. If you're replacing a front door on a property in Crawley and budget is a real constraint, a quality uPVC door with a 3-star cylinder and a good gearbox is a secure door. Don't let a salesperson tell you otherwise.
Composite is worth the extra money in these situations:
- You want the kerb appeal and the door to still look good in fifteen years without repainting or replacing.
- You're in a cooler or north-facing elevation where the better thermal mass of a solid core genuinely reduces draughts and heat loss.
- You're a landlord fitting a door you don't want to touch again for thirty years.
- The property is a semi or terrace where an attempted break-in might involve more physical force on the panel, and you want that additional mass.
If you're in Gossops Green or Northgate and you want a door that looks great, lasts decades, and gives you no grief, composite is a fine choice. Just don't buy it on the security argument alone.
What I'd Actually Fit
On my own front door: a solid composite slab for the longevity and the look, a Ultion TS007 3-star cylinder, and a GU or Maco multipoint gearbox upgraded from whatever the builder originally specced. PAS24 tested frame. That's the combination.
If budget was tight? A quality uPVC from a local installer in the RH10 to RH11 postcode area, same cylinder, same gearbox. Sleep fine.
The showroom wants to sell you the door. I want you to buy the right lock for whichever door you choose.
